Sin City

Movies

Okay, so i was looking on one of my favorite comic book movies sites and there was this post talking about a movie called Sin City, but because i hadnt read any of the comics i didnt think much of it. Then i saw a picture of Jessica Alba in it, and she was looking good. So i thought i would check it out. I watched the trailer, checked out the cast and was thrown back in amazement. There are 15 people in the cast that i recognize just by name. How amazing is that? That never happens. So needless to say, I am now pumped about this movie coming out. I mean, it looks absolutely kickin. Here is the link to the trailer if anyone wants to check it out.

Marc Broussard: Carenco

Music

B0002iqig001 I heard his song "Home" once on the radio and bought the album. Really didnt realize he was a young white kid. It had way too much blues to be a white guy singing. Really cool album. it is hard to decide what genre it is though. Sounds like Stevie Wonder/ Muddy Waters/ Maroon 5. "Home" is still my favorite track and if you listen to that song, you will want it as well.

John Mayer: Heavier Things

Music

Heavier_things This album is really good. It has a very calming feeling to it. Think Dave Matthews without the crazy guitar and stuff going on. Instead of having the complexity of Dave, he has the calming effect of Norah Jones.

The Terminal

Movies

Terminal This movie was really good. Tom Hanks plays Victor Navorski, a citizen of a small Eastern European country. While traveling to the U.S. by air, his country turns into a battleground to the point to where his country does not exist at the time. Because of this, he cannot go home, nor go into the U.S. because he doesn’t belong to a country. So he is forced to live in the airport terminal until the conflict is resolved. It is a great movie, and, of course, Tom Hanks does an amazing job as a foreigner. I would say that anyone over the age of 12 will love it. The only reason why i say that age and older is because it might be a little above younger children to watch. It is a must-see though. Four stars for The Terminal.

Alexander

Movies

Alexander For those of you who don’t feel like reading my whole review of this movie, let me just quickly give you my thoughts on the movie. Don’t go see it. Done.

Now, for those of you who want to know why you shouldn’t see it, let me elaborate. I am very easy when it comes to movies. I watch them and love them and try not to overthink movies, but instead try to see what the director was trying to do with his vision of the movie. On that note, I am unsure of what the director was going for with this movie. You would think that with a great storyline, talented cast, and good writers, he would fashion a movie that would be a hit. Unfortunately that is not what happened. Even though all the reviews said you should stay away from this movie, i still wanted to see it to see that it couldn’t be as bad as they said. But it was.

Colin Farrell, whom I normally enjoy in the various roles he has taken on thus far, did a very sub-par job in his performance as Alexander. Angelina Jolie, looking hot as always, was looking good, but her accent was terrible and acting was very one-dimensional as the mother of Alexander. Val Kilmer has aged, and not well, I know that in this movie he is supposed to be a war veteran/father of Alexander, but he was looking rough and did not do the role justice as to what it could have been. I will say that the only person in the cast who did a good job and that stood out by leaps and bounds in this movie, was a virtual unknown by the name of Jared Leto who plays Hephaistion. He was very good and played the part of Alexander’s right hand man very eloquently. I enjoyed watching him in this role, and wanted to see more of him and less of the people that i expected quality performances from. Now, on to the writing.

If you like gay overtones and undertones, then you might like this movie more than i do. It was constantly putting men’s relationships in questionable situations with other men. Every time there was a moment that could have been a very heterosexual friendship, they would go a little too far and put it in the back of your mind and make you think that maybe there was more going on relationally than you knew. The only redeeming quality of the writing aspect of the movie, was actually not the writing, but the directing. The best part of the entire movie was the fight scene in the first hour. The first big fight was great. It was very realistic, and not a beautiful thing like most times movies make it out to be. Every man is equal, and does not make one more better just because of the status he holds in life. After this scene, you expect more of it, and it never happens again.  There really is no climax to the movie. It grows during the first half hour and then stays on a level field until it ends. There is no time when you truly are excited, or scared, or really any emotion overtakes you. Instead it is simply an unfulfilling movie that leaves so much to be desired. Think of it as your friend who tries to be deep and philosophical by using big words, but just doesn’t know how to do it.

The storyline is great. It has nothing to do with the writers or the actors or the director, but simply to do with Alexander. It was interesting historically, but that is it. That is really the only redeeming value that it has is that it was a historic time that was amazing, My final thoughts on the movie are as follows. If you want to see a movie where there is no love story, no good acting, no good writing, only one good action scene, and a needless sex scene, then you go right ahead and see Alexander. Now for the rest of you, it is not worth your ticket money. I am not even sure it is worth a rental. If it costs you less than a dollar to see and you are extremely bored, then go ahead and see it so you can have something to badmouth the rest of the evening, but other than that, don’t ever see this movie. I give Alexander 1 out of 5 stars.

Blade: Trinity

Movies

Blade Well, i got to go see Blade. And I must say, it was pretty sweet. There were a lot of really cool action parts. The fight sequences were very well put together and very well choreographed. The sword fight scene between Blade and Dracula was amazing. With most sword scenes, they are sped up and you can tell because their footwork doesn’t quite go with their swordplay, which makes it look a little funny, but this fight scene was in real time. It looked really good, and could not have been a smoother fight.

Now, let me do a little section on Jessica Biel. The girl was unreal in this movie. I read that for her next movie, she actually had to tone down her workout routine so that her shoulders wouldn’t be so unrealistically big. She was in amazing shape for this movie, and it showed. You could tell that the actors really took thier time to get in character and get to the point that the characters would have been at physically. I had a friend accuse me of just enjoying the movie because Jessica Biel was in it. And while I will say it didn’t hurt that she was wearing a sports bra most of the movie, she was not the determining factor in me enjoying this movie. Wesley Snipes did a great job, as always, in the character of Blade. And Ryan Reynolds was great at comic relief in the part of Hannibal King. If you have ever laughed while watching "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" or "Van Wilder", you need to see this movie. If not for the action, then for Ryan Reynolds witty banter. It is like watching Chandler from Friends, but without all of the complexes and censors. I will say that the F-Bomb was dropped multiple times in this movie, but in movies like this, it is to be expected. I enjoyed this movie alot, and think that if you like Sci-Fi or action movies, you need to see it. Blades 1 and 2 were great, but not anywhere near the starpower or excitement of this movie. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Christmas

Current Affairs

Well, it is Christmas. Merry Christmas to everyone who reads my blog. So far it has been great, and as always, i got lots of stuff that i could have done without, but of course love what I got. One thing that i love about Christmas is that it is a time of hope. As you probably know, i am a big fan of media. Whether it is music, movies, or television, I love that it makes you think and feel things that you don’t normally get the chance to feel.

Something that is great about Christmas is that it is a time when people believe anything can happen. It is a time when the feeling of hope resounds throughout conversations, in the minds of children and parents alike. It is a beautiful thing to be able to hear stories about the happy endings that happen in life. News has more human interest stories that have a positive outlook that they normally reserve for the end of the broadcast. When you walk through stores, you hear more people letting others go ahead of them, even though the hustle and bustle have taken over many people.

I just wish that this same sense of hope and positive thinking would include the rest of the year. This only happens once a year and when you think of it that way, it kind of becomes a sad thing. The hope that we have comes from a day, from a magical day that happens because of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. It is a wonderful time and I wish that it truly was Christmas all year. Not because of the presents that everyone exchanges mostly out of obligation, but because of the great feeling that comes with the time of year when people believe that anything can happen with all thier hearts.

On that note, I hope that everyone’s Christmas dreams come true this year, and that their Christmas is as happy as mine has been. (Not to mention, i hope you get all the gifts you want.) Merry Christmas to you all from my family and myself.

Off the Market

Current Affairs

Well ladies, Andrew Skeenes is now officially off the market. All but one of you ladies have waited too long to make your move on him. As many of you know, last night he and Jessica got married. It was a really nice wedding, I sang a couple of songs and they got hitched. I am very happy for them both. They are two awesome people and they could not have found anyone more suited than each other.

And being a single guy at a wedding, being the best man, you have no idea how many times I was asked when my time was coming. I am not exaggerating when I say I was asked 15 times. It’s not to say that I don’t want to get married, but here is the way I look at it. With being a full-time student, working a full-time job, doing church stuff, and having a social life, I don’t have time to seek out anyone. I mean, i am human and have my eyes open so that if I see someone that I am attracted to, i try to talk to them and see if they are worth the chance, but most times they aren’t. If a friend of mine says "I have a girl you should meet", then that is cool. I have no problem being set-up, but because I don’t do the club scene and work at a company where it is overrun with the male gender. Then it is not really an option for me to meet someone on my own unless I am introduced by someone that I already know. I am not actively searching, but would not mind having a date every now and then, even if I am picky.
Let’s go over the criteria:
Attractive – If there is no attraction, then the urge will be too strong to stray

Christian – Must put God very high on the list, otherwise it won’t work

Between 21-25 years old – Outside of that range, they are in a very different life stage than myself

Strong family life – Without having similar backgrounds, there is a big difference in moral views

Drinking Habits – A couple is okay, but someone who enjoys getting drunk doesn’t work for me

No Smoking – I can’t handle smoking, neither can my family

Mean Streak – I like nice girls, but I can’t handle someone who is nice to me all the time, otherwise I will walk all over them, so they have to have a little bit of a mean streak to offset mine

Not Crazy – Majority of girls who pass that first requirement, have more than enough craziness for 3 or 4 girls

Athletic – I enjoy working out, or running or anything of the sort, and want a person I can share that with

Now, for me that doesn’t sound like too much to ask, but apparently it is. Other than 2 girls I dated for short seasons, I have found no girls who passed my requirements, who weren’t already attached, in 3 years. And one of those girls just had me fooled. So, for those of you who know me, those are my requirements. Just thought I would let you know that. Now, let me step down off my soap box and go back to the original reason for this post.

Congratulations Andrew and Jessica, I am very happy for you, and hope you live a long, wonderful life together. I love you both and pray for your marriage.
