The 40 Year Old Virgin Review

I went into this movie looking to enjoy it, but not to the extent that I did. I noticed that it had almost a 90% rating on Rottentomatoes.com
and knew it would be fun, but I really didn’t think it would be this
much fun. This was the funniest movie I have seen this year. And for it
to dethrone Wedding Crashers is saying a lot. I don’t know whether it
was quite as quotable or had as many parts where people were really
laughing out loud, but I was literally smiling the whole time and was
just on the edge of my seat waiting for the next joke. It was really
hilarious. Now, all that to say it was extremely vulgar. They kept on
using slang words for a certain female body part multiple times that
just amazed me. They kept it going for a long time and really amazed me
at the use. But it was still so funny that it was quickly forgotten. I
have to give 40 Year Old Virgin an 8 out of 10.
Steve Carell was absolutely brilliant. He was great on The Daily
Show where he got his start, but has since done a few movies and been
funny in them all. This was really his coming out party. He blew me
away in this movie. He was great in the role of Andy Stitzer the 40
year old virgin. I don’t know that he dropped one line that was meant
to be funny that I didn’t laugh at. He was dead on. His character has a
multitude of video gaming equipment, comic books, and action figures.
In fact, it looks a little like my room, but on a grander scale. Wait,
what does that say about me in 16 years? Anyways, he works at a Best
Buy/Circuit City type electronics store as the anti-social stock room
type guy. And he is deathly afraid of being on the showroom floor
selling stuff to customers. He has absolutely no interpersonal skills
as is evident by those who have worked with him for awhile thinking
that he might be a serial killer because of his weirdness.
The guys who are more than a little worried about him are 3 guys
that he works with and are trying their hardest to get a girl to sleep
with him. The first is Paul Rudd, the name may not sound familiar, but
if I say Phoebe’s husband from Friends that may ring a bell a little
more. He plays David, the seemingly stable guy who pines after his
ex-girlfriend whom he spent so much time with and misses the days of
love between the two of them. Then there is Romany Malco in the
character of Jay. Jay has a girlfriend whom he is very serious about,
yet cheats on multiple times. And lastly is Seth Rogen who plays Cal
the friend who is single and loving it.
You kind of get tips from these guys and think, that could never
work, then as Andy tries them out, they somehow work for him. They tell
him to act cocky and just ask questions, and as he tries it, you laugh
because it is a little awkward and yet the girl finds it interesting
and likes it, so she stays interested in him. They tell him to pickup
drunk chicks and he does a great job at that as well. It really makes
its way into you knowing that he is a great guy who can be completely
social, but chooses not to go that route. You also find out that the
guys who are giving the advice are just as clueless as he is in the
ways of women. This should really show you how complex women are in
real life.
There are so many funny scenes in this movie that it is really hard
to point out just one. So I’m gonna give a quick rundown of my favorite
moments. The scene where they get Andy drunk lock him in a room with
porn blasting on a big screen TV behind him is hilarious. It is just
the type of thing that guys would do to another guy if they knew it
made him uncomfortable. One of my favorite lines by Andy is " Sarcasm
is like a second language to me, so I hear what you’re saying". I loved
that line. The best scene by far though is the scene where he gets his
chest waxed. I read before going to see the movie that he actually had
them wax his chest for this. He said that he wanted it to be real, so
he wanted them to really rip the hair off. It was so funny. And I am
betting by the other actors’ reactions in the scene that they didn’t
know what he was going to say after each rip either. You just saw them
dying laughing and just amazed at what he said each time a piece of
paper was pulled off of him. It is exactly like other guys are in real
life to enjoy the pain of one of their friends. Not in a malicious way
or anything, but if they know that it isn’t going to cause any
permanent damage and is something that will go away quickly, then they
will laugh so hard.
You really get the comradery between these guys in this movie. You
feel like these guys have known each other for quite awhile and can
tell by the quips toward each other that they know how to kind of dig
at each other and get just enough under the skin to annoy the other
guys without making them mad at each other. It was so much fun to
watch. You really have to go see this movie. It was one of those films
that I will be giving multiple viewings. So after my review, hopefully
I have enticed you enough to want to see this movie. I can give 40 Year
Old Virgin a solid 8 out of 10 with a clear conscience. Go see it, that
is, if you aren’t too offended by language and a little bit of nudity.
