Jarhead Review

JarheadJarhead stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx and Peter Sarsgaard as members of the sniper marines from the Desert Shield/Storm war. Even though Gyllenhaal is the star of the story, he gets the star taken away from him by both of his co-stars. This being Foxx’s follow-up to his award winning Ray performance, he shows why he got that award. You may think that Stealth was his follow-up, but it was actually filmed before Ray. Sarsgaard shows that he will be in films for decades to come. You will remember him from Garden State, Flightplan, or Skeleton Key. The guy is truly the star of this and any other movie he comes on screen for. The film is made by Sam Mendes who made American Beauty. There are traces of his style in flashback scenes that are reminiscent of American Beauty, but this is a very different film that warrants standing on its own. It is hard to believe that these men were in the desert for months and months and their war actually only lasted a few hours. I have a serious respect for these men who made the sacrifices to do what they were asked. The film is more about the psychological aspect of things, and not the physical aspect that is focused on in most other military movies. I give Jarhead a 7 out of 10.
