Second Quarter 2006 Movie Previews

Well, it is April 1st and we are into the second quarter of the year. So It is time for my second quarter movie roundup. I have done some research and looked at what will be coming out in the next 3 months, and here is a list of the films, along with my thoughts on them.

April 7

The Benchwarmers
– Starring Rob Schneider, Jon Heder, and David Spade, this comedy about 3 adults who are trying to make up for their lack of athletic abilities when they were younger looks like it could be funny, but I am not holding my breath. Jon Heder is just doing his Napoleon Dynamite character, where David Spade and Rob Schneider are just looking for a paycheck.

Lucky Number Slevin – This looks really good. With a cast like this, it can’t go wrong. The main players are Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, and Morgan Freeman. I doubt it will do well at the box office, but I have a feeling this film will be really good, and will be more of a cult hit.

Phat Girlz – It looks like just another black comedy. I have nothing against comedies with black casts, but when your comedy comes from the fact that you are black and that is supposed to be funny, it gets old fast. We have seen so many of them that it is kind of tiresome. Just forget about this one.

Take the Lead – Antonio Banderas is a ballroom dancer who has to teach some hoodlums that the rest of society has forgotten about what real dancing is. I am sure it will all end with some competition with a lot at stake, where they have been practicing a move the whole movie and they finally get it at the end to win. Sound familiar?

April 14

Scary Movie 4 – Anna Farris reprises her role in the farce flicks about any scary movies that have been released in the past 3 years. If you liked the first ones, I am sure this one will be more of the same.

The Wild – If you have seen Madagascar, then you have seen this film. The difference is that instead of animals from a zoo going to a remote island, this time, animals from the jungle come to the city. The only possible redeeming factor is that William Shatner is one of the voices. Could be gold.

April 21

American Dreamz – Did we really need a movie about American Idol? That is essentially what this is about. It star Hugh Grant and Mandy Moore. I would say it will do well at the box office because people love American Idol, but I just don’t think this is going to be anything special.

The Sentinel – Micheal Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Eva Longoria, and Kim Basinger star in this film about a major secret service bodyguard who is accused of being a threat to the president after many years of service. Now he has to find out who is the actual threat. It looks like it could be a good film. Plus it has Eva in it, it has to be good.

Silent Hill – So far, there hasn’t been a really good video game movie. But this one looks like it is going to be really cool. Could this be the turning point in video game movies? We’ll see. I am hopeful of this one. I just hope it doesn’t give the heroine super powers or something. Just keep it basic.

April 28

Akeelah and the Bee – This looks like a quality film. I think it might have been released in the wrong time period though. It looks more like an oscar contender, than a throw away film. It is about an eleven year old Los Angeles girl who gives hope to a community by rising up and doing well in a spelling bee.

RV – I was wondering when Robin Williams would get back to his comedic roots. This doesn’t look like the comedies we are used to seeing him in though. It makes me nervous. I have such a high respect for him as an actor that this one looks like it could be very disappointing. Hopefully I will be proven wrong.

Stick It – Hey, look, it’s Bring it On part 3. It has Jeff Bridges in it as a coach who takes a girls gymnastics team to a competition where they try to win. I am sure that even though they don’t get along in the beginning, they will by the end.

United 93 – I really think it is still too soon to do a film about September 11th. But they are doing it anyway. It really comes down to, do people agree with me on this? I don’t know. But how insensitive can people be?

Water – I am really not sure what to make of this one. It looks neat, but I hope it doesn’t open in too many theaters because I don’t think it will do well at the box office.

May 5 – Here we go, time for the summer blockbusters.

An American Haunting – This one is actually set in Tenneseee. It is about the one recorded case where a ghost actually killed someone. It looks extremely freaky.

Hoot – This film looks like one that kids will enjoy, where it shows that they can make a difference in the world. It is about kids who look at the environment and truly try to save it.

Mission Impossible III – Tom Cruise is back with a nice cast in this action flick. It is about time we saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a bad guy. Tom Cruise has such a limited range that he has to stick with roles like this one. He will be good in this, but he has to be, he has played pretty much this same role about 15 times.

May 12

Alpha Dog – At first, I thought that this film looked alright, but after watching the trailer again, it doesn’t look so great. I think a lot of people will turn out for this one just because it is Justin Timberlake’s first major role. But it has a hard R rating, so the teeny boppers can’t go. Good thing.

Goal! The Dream Begins – A movie about a guy who gets the chance to play for a major soccer team after coming from poverty. I like the look of this film. Plus the fact that it doesn’t have big name actors in it makes me more hopeful of it.

Haven – There isn’t much information on this film yet. I think this could be Orlando Bloom’s last chance to have a solid stand-out role. His last few tries have been less than great.

Just My Luck – Lindsay Lohan in a romantic comedy? I would have never guessed. She has all the luck in the world, and a guy she meets has no luck. With a kiss, their luck exchanges and they live in each other’s shoes for a bit. Not looking so great really.

Poseidon – Kurt Russell back in action roles. Sweet. I am ready for it. This is going to be really cool. It will be a throwaway action movie, but it will definitely be fun. Don’t expect to be blown away, but if you just want to go and have fun at a film, go to this one. I am thinking it will be the big popcorn-stop-thinking film of the year like Mr. and Mrs. Smith was last year.

May 19

The Da Vinci Code – I have read all of the Dan Brown books and this one is the most widely adopted. If this movie is anywhere near the book, then it is going to be amazing. The acting talent in this looks great too, so it is all up to the writing. Tom Hanks is a perfect Robert Langdon.

Over the Hedge – An animated film with some really good voice talent. I actually like the look of this one. I don’t expect it to break any records, but I think it will be a fun movie geared towards kids and adults.

See No Evil – This is what happens when you let just anybody have their own movie studio. The WWE has their own movie studio where they will just populate it with wrestlers. This is the beginning of the end.

May 26

X-Men: The Last Stand – Nobody wants to open against this powerhouse. I don’t think I have made it any secret that I am excited and nervous about this one. This really could be amazing, and by the trailer, it looks that way. But it still makes me nervous with all of the rumors and news flying around the making of this thing. I really hope this is good, and if the footage we have seen so far is any indication, this is going to be awesome.

June 2

The Breakup – Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston in a comedy about breaking up. It looks like a lot of fun. And I am sure it will be funny. I am going to go ahead and say it will be the funniest movie so far this year.

June 6

The Omen – There is simply a trailer up about this one, but it looks freaky. I don’t know if it will actually be good, and I am going to go ahead and say it won’t be, but they did a good job in the marketing department of this one.

June 9

Cars – From the same studio that brought you Finding Nemo and the Toy Story films, this could break their streak of quality films. The trailer just does not look funny to me. I am highly skeptical about this one. It was bound to happen eventually, but Pixar is going to bomb on this one.

A Prairie Home Companion – You know what I just said about The Breakup? Well, I think that it will only hold its reign as the funniest movie of the year for a week because this looks absolutely great. I am extremely excited about this film. I really hope it does well. It has a great cast, and the trailer shows some excellent writing.

June 16

The Fast and the Furious : Tokyo Drift – Well, it was about time for Three Fast Three Furious to come out. This time, they got a southern boy to go to Tokyo to drive them real fast motorcars. YeeHaw. Oh, this looks bad. So bad. It will have some really cool cars, with some really cool racing scenes, but in the way of acting and writing, just chalk it up to crap.

The Lake House – Not a lot of info on this one yet. But it stars Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves together who exchange love notes with each other, then find out they are living 2 years apart. It is in the Drama and Romance genres, so it doesn’t look like a scary movie. I don’t really know what to think about this one yet. We’ll have to wait for more information.

Nacho Libre – What do you get when you mix Napoleon Dynamite with Jack Black? Nacho Libre. It is the same style of humor and same writers from Napoleon Dynamite, but with an established actor in the comedic lead. Just watch the trailer and you will see just how funny this could be.

June 23

Click – I am so ready for a new Adam Sandler movie. This looks hilarious. I want a remote that can pause, rewind, mute fast forward through the things I feel like. This looks really funny, but at the same time, it looks like a really good film that will be on par with Big Daddy.

Garfield : A Tale of Two Kitties – Why they are making another Garfield movie I will never know. I guess Bill Murray needed a paycheck. If this didn’t have Jennifer Love Hewitt in it, I would have absolutely no interest in this film. It looks horrible.

Waist Deep – This film looks alright. Tyrese is in a situation where he has gone straight from the crimes of his past. He straightens up for his son, then his son gets nabbed, and he has to do the things he said he wouldn’t do to get him back. I don’t think it will win any awards, but it looks pretty good.

June 30

The Devil Wears Prada – Prada is a brand name right? There weren’t near as many chick flicks in this quarter as I thought there would be. I am surprised. But they have to have a few, so here you go. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep star in this one. It is the only genre that could open this weekend against the biggest movie of the year.

Superman Returns – I am so excited about this one. And I know I am not the only one. Get ready for this film. It takes place after the second original superman film. Oh my goodness it looks great too. I can’t convey how pumped I am about this movie.
