Well, here we are at the beginning of July, and that means that the third quarter is starting. So I have 3 months of movies to go through with you. So, go ahead and click on if you want to know what is coming out between now and the end of September
July 7
Pirates of the Caribbean – I really don’t even need to put anything on this one. You have seen the same stuff I have about it, and it looks great. This may be the big moneymaker of the summer.
A Scanner Darkly – Based on the Phillip K. Dick novel about drugs in a future society. It is using animation on top of real life acting to give a very surreal feel to the entire picture. I don’t know if it will be for everyone, but I think it will be interesting.
July 14
Little Man – This looks absolutely terrible. The concept sounds funny, but if you have seen the trailer, then you know that having a midget pose as a baby is not going to work for this Wayans brothers comedy.
You, Me, and Dupree – Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, and Matt Dillon all get to live together in this film about how three’s a crowd.
July 21
Clerks II – The sequel to the film debut for Kevin Smith. If you have seen any of his movies, then you know that they all intertwine. I just want to know how a sequel will work into the mix.
Lady in the Water – M. Night Shyamalan has a new film out. It is supposed to be a bedtime fairy tale. It has already gotten one review that likened it to Princess Bride, so that makes me hopeful. The Village was subpar, but the rest of his movies have elevated him to another level. I hope he can keep it up.
Monster House – This animated film makes you wonder if the scary house down the street really has a mind of its own and if it really does eat little kids.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend – Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson star in this superhero date comedy. Luke Wilson dates Uma Thurman and doesn’t find out she’s a superhero until he breaks up with her and is scared for his life.
July 28
The Ant Bully – Another CGI movie geared towards kids. Think Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but with talking bugs that needed the kids help. The first trailer wasn’t appealing, but it might end up being a good movie afterall.
John Tucker Must Die – There had to be at least one teen movie out this summer. This one looks like it is going to be bad, but with some funny moments. Of course all of them will be in the trailer. The "Yama Llama" phrase scene looks really funny. Watch the trailer, and that is the movie.
Miami Vice – I wasn’t excited about this one until I saw the trailers. It looks like a gritty, yet flashy adaptation of the Don Johnson TV show from the 80’s. I think that it is going to be really good.
August 4
Barnyard – If barnyard animals could talk and tried to do things their way instead of the way things have always been done. It would be nothing like this. It would be a lot funnier. This looks like a flop.
The Descent – Some ladies go repelling, and it doesn’t look like any of them are coming back out alive. It looks completely freaky. I want to see that one.
The Night Listener – I really don’t know what to say about this one. It stars Robin Williams. I want him to have a resurgence in his career, but it just hasn’t happened yet. I don’t think this will be it either. This drama/thriller won’t go anywhere.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby – People wonder if the humor of Will Ferrell is wearing thin, but I don’t think so. I this will be another great film to put into his repertoire of one liners and fun movies.
August 9
World Trade Center – The Oliver Stone and Nicholas Cage vehicle that will stir up a lot more controversy than United 93. It will romanticize the whole September 11th catastrophe and will end up making a lot of people mad.
August 11
Accepted – I wish I had thought of this. I wish I could start my own college to study whatever is of interest to me, and not the core curriculum that you have to have to get a degree. This looks like a pretty neat movie, but it won’t do well at the box office.
Pulse – Kristen Bell is finally on the big screen. This is a North American Remake of a Japanese horror movie. It looks really freaky. I think this will be a really cool movie.
Step Up – If you like dancing movies, then this one is for you. It is actually directed by a choreographer. It will be a terrible movie, but if you like dancing, then you will enjoy this one.
Zoom – Tim Allen has to take some Superhero kids under his wing to try and save the world. I wish this would be a good movie, but I really doubt it will be worth the price of admission.
August 18
The Illusionist – I am so excited about this one. It stars one of the best actors of our day in Edward Norton. There isn’t much out there on it, but the guy doesn’t pick crappy parts, so it has to be good.
Material Girls – Okay, when I said before that another movie was the teen movie. Well, this one is the pre-teen movie. It is starring Hillary and Haylie Duff. Nuff Said
Snakes on a Plane – If you haven’t heard of this one yet, then you are living in a hole. This Samuel L. Jackson movie is made to be campy fun. It will be a good hour and a half of mind-numbing one-liners and snakes…on a plane.
August 25
Beerfest – I love Super Troopers and the Broken Lizard crew. This is their newest film. It is about an underground olympic competition for drinking beer. It looks like a lot of fun.
DOA : Dead or Alive – Based loosely on the video game with the same name. The movie is just pretty girls who kick tail. Nothing more, nothing less.
How to Eat Fried Worms – I’m sure you read the book of the same name. This kids movie will give new life to that great book.
Idlewild – This is one of my most anticipated movies of 2006. Set in the 30’s, this one is like a gangster musical with music by Outkast. It looks so good. It will be amazing for sure.
Invincible – Disney knows how to do the sports movies. This one stars Greg Kinnear and Mark Wahlberg. It is the story of giving a nobody the chance to be somebody for his town and the world.
September 1
Crank – If you like Jason Statham and the Transporter movies, then this will be right up your alley. This is about Jason Stathan of the Transporter and how he has to keep his adrenaline up in order to stay alive and save the girl he loves.
Crossover – Surprise, surprise, it’s about basketball. It looks like it will be all rap music and ballin’. I am okay with that. Turn off your brain for 2 hours.
Goal II The Journey Continues – Number 2 in the trilogy of soccer or futbol movies. The first one was good and left you feeling uplifted, just as it should. I am sure this will be much of the same. If you like soccer, or sports movies, you will probably like this one.
Idiocracy – Five
hundred years in the future, Joe Bowers (Luke Wilson) discovers he’s
the smartest man on the planet, and he becomes a close advisor to the
president of the United States President Comacho (Terry Alan Crews) in
"Idiocracy".
Lassie – Apparently, if you call a collie Lassie, then it saves people and turns its life into a heroic tale. This Lassie story takes place in what looks like the 30’s. Heartwarming, i’m sure.
The Wicker Man – This looks like Nicholas Cage’s type of movie. It seems to be a very freaky, and action oriented movie. Think of The Forgotten, but with a freaky twist and Nicholas Cage.
September 8
The Covenant – There isn’t a lot of information on this one yet. It is classified as action/thriller/horror, and has to do with a covenant of recieving powers from their fathers and accidentally unleashing something terrible.
I Could Never Be Your Woman – Judging by the cast, and the story, this looks like a very fun rom-com. I mean, Michelle Pfieffer and Paul Rudd? Good deal. I like it. I want to see a trailer before I put too much stock in it though.
Lucky You – Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, and Robert Duvall in a drama about being lucky at poker, and the life lessons that come with that. It has a good cast, but I need more info before I can decide whether I like it or not.
Pathfinder – Looks like to me that we have a good viking movie on the way. I don’t think this will get any awards, but I am betting it will be a good action film.
September 15
The Black Dhalia – I guess we are in the season of good casting because this looks really interesting and could turn out to be a stellar movie. Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansen, and Hilary Swank in a based on real life story of murder in Hollywood.
Black Snake Moan – A young white nymphomaniac (Christina Ricci) tries to get "cured" of her problem with the help of an older black blues man (Samuel L. Jackson). I wonder where they got the name from?
Employee of the Month – Why would they put Jessica Simpson in another movie? Hopefully they can keep her lines to a bare minimum. Dax Shepard and Dane Cook are in it, so it might be alright, but I am not holding my breath on this one.
Everyone’s Hero – CGI movie for kids about someone stealing Babe Ruth’s bat and a kid has to go and find it to save his dad’s job. I am sure it will end happily ever after.
Gridiron Gang – The Rock and Xzibit turn thugs into football players in another mis-step for The Rock’s acting career.
Haven – "Haven"
takes place during the course of one weekend as two shady businessmen
(Bill Paxton and Stephen Dillane) flee to the Caymans to avoid federal prosecution.
Their escape ignites a chain reaction that leads Orlando Bloom, a British
native, to commit a crime that has enormous implications.
The Last Kiss – Zach Braff’s followup to Garden State. This looks like it is going to be another great movie. The guy has a definite future ahead of him, whether it is in writing or acting.
September 22
All the King’s Men – I see possible Oscars ahead for this movie. The cast is really good, and the story seems to be the same way. Based
on Robert Penn Warren’s 1946 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "All the
King’s Men" is a classic of American literature that tells the story of
an idealistic man of the people who soon becomes corrupted by success
and caught between dreams of service and an insatiable lust for power.
Feast – A
group of strangers gather in a bar where they’re attacked and
systematically killed by monsters. The film was a product of "Project
Greenlight", the program created by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris
Moore to showcase new talent.
The Guardian – Kevin Costner seems to be having a resurgence in his career. This one seems to be just right. It even has Ashton Kutcher in it and it still looks really good. Check out the trailer for this movie.
Jackass Number Two – The first one was hilarious, and now I am hoping the second one is the same way. If you like Johnny Knoxville and Bam Margera and that crew, then enjoy more of the same.
Jet Li’s Fearless – Jet Li’s latest, and possibly final, kung fu movie. Subtitled, yes. Some serious action stuff as well.
September 29
Angel-A – This one I really don’t know much about. There is a french trailer up, but that doesn’t do much good.
Children of Men – Sci-Fi movie starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore in a film about the human population facing death and what must be done to save it. It has promise, but the execution could prove differently.
Flyboys – The
unforgettable story of a group of heroic American men who volunteer for
the French Military and become fighter pilots before the US enters WWI. It looks pretty good to me.
Open Season – Looks like one of the better CGI movies of the year. I think it will be fun to see the forest get taken over by animals and have them take back their natural habitat from man.
School for Scoundrels – In
this film loosely based on the 1960 British comedy, a shy young meter
reader (Jon Heder) enrolls in a class to help build his confidence so
he can win over his dream girl (Jacinda Barrett), only to find out that
the teacher of the class (Billy Bob Thornton) also has his eyes on her.
I just saw Pirates 2, and it was as good as I expected, but I was very disappointed that A Scanner Darkly didn’t get a wider distribution … It won’t play anywhere my little corner of the world, so I’ll have to wait for DVD
Saw Clerks 2 yesterday and it was at least as good as I expected … Kevin Smith still rocks!
