How in the world did October get here so quickly? This is amazing. I have seen quite a few movies over the summer, but not near as many as I wanted. I am trying to catch up on the ones that have come out that look interesting. But it is time for me to put out my list of movies that are coming out in the next three months and with limited information, give you an idea of what they are about and what looks good. Keep in mind that these are only the wide releases, but since it is Oscar time, then there will be a lot of limited releases that make their way onto the big screens near you. You will notice that I like about 80% of movies, but that is what trailers are for, right? To get up enthusiasm. That’s why people make the big bucks. So without further ado, we’re off and running.
October 6
The Departed – This one consists of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson spearheading a star-studded cast. It looks amazing really. And not only is it a big, amazing cast, but it is a remake of a Japanese movie that has gotten a lot of fanfair. So you know that the storyline is going to be up to par with the cast. This is one I am seriously interested in.
Employee of the Month – At first, I wasn’t very interested in this movie. I figured it would be just another crappy film. But the more I see the trailers, the better it looks. It could be a lot of fun actually. I am not expecting the acting to be great, but it could have a lot of quotable lines that make the movie worthwhile.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre : The Beginning – I saw the remake of the original and wasn’t too impressed really. And I am expecting more of the same from this one. I am sure that horror buffs will go see this and be excited, but I am not one of those people, so you won’t get that reaction out of me.
October 13
The Grudge 2 – Believe it or not, I haven’t seen the first Grudge movie, but I have heard a lot of people talk about how freaky it is. This one will be freaky I am sure, but I am not a big fan of scary movies. I guess Sarah Michelle Gellar has to have something to do these days.
Man of the Year – This film stars Robin Williams in a Jon Stewart type role and he runs for president…and wins. This is a perfect role for Robin Williams. He has a great blend of comedic talent, and acting ability. And it will show with a movie like this. I don’t really know where they will take the storyline, but I am stoked about this film and think it will be really good.
The Marine – I know it is released by the WWE, but it still looks like fun. I also know that it looks ridiculous and over the top, but that doesn’t kill the fun factor. I think it looks like a good popcorn flick. And considering it is up against a horror movie and a comedy, I think this will actually have a crowd at the box office.
One Night with the King – It looks like a B movie. I do like the fact that the Christian community is trying to get their movies to the public, but they have to make more of an effort than this one. This looks horrible.
October 20
Flags of our Fathers – This is directed by Clint Eastwood as his follow-up to Million Dollar Baby. It is the stories of the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. It looks like it could be another Oscar contender. Hopefully that will be the case. It is starred by some B-list stars, but in a movie that is about people who you don’t know their names, that is great casting.
Flicka – Alright, let’s be serious. A horse movie starring Tim McGraw? Oh goodness. Anybody can get a movie made these days.
Marie Antoinette – I am really not sure whether I like this one or not. It looks interesting, but it has Kirsten Dunst in it. It is directed by Sophia Coppola, so that is a good thing, but I am just afraid they are going to contemporize this movie and make it more of A Knight’s Tale than it should be.
The Prestige – Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are rival magicians in this movie directed by Christopher Nolan. Come on, it is Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan back together, of course I am pumped about this film.
Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D – There isn’t much to say about this one. I mean, it is a re-release in 3-D. So you know what you are in for.
October 27
Catch A Fire – This could possibly be an Oscar-worthy performance for Derek Luke. It is him and Tim Robbins in a film about South Africa and the wars inside. I am sure this will be good, but will it get recognized?
Saw III – Why do they keep making these movies? Because they keep making money off of people being completely freaked out. So you can expect more of the same. And if this one does well, then you can expect another one next year.
November 3
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan – This could quite possibly be one of the funniest movies ever. If you haven’t seen the trailers yet, then you should. It looks hilarious. Sasha Baron Cohen is working his way into American households finally after all these years.
Flushed Away – I am not at all excited about this one. This is an animated film about rats who have this whole other world. It is very much a kiddie movie. There are some animated movies that aim for adults, but this is not one of them.
The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause – The first Santa Clause movie is a classic, and the second one was still pretty good. Hopefully this one will be fun. Martin Short is in this and he hasn’t had the best film track record so hopefully he won’t mess this one up.
November 10
A Good Year – It is Russell Crowe. He makes really good choices creatively. This is one of those movies where you put your priorities back where they need to be. I don’t think it will be amazing, but it does do well as a trailer.
Harsh Times – Christian Bale doesn’t put in a bad performance. This looks like an intense movie. I mean, the guy is crazy and about to work for Homeland Security. I like this one a lot. I don’t know how much I will like it as a movie, but it looks seriously rough.
The Return – Apparently all Sarah Michelle Gellar can do is horror movies. Hallucinations and people trying to kill her. Sounds like an ordinary day to me. I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Another throw-away movie to put into her filmography.
Stranger Than Fiction – This is Will Ferrell’s shot at a semi-serious movie. I mean, the concept is pretty funny and interesting, but the movie looks like it has a serious feel to it. This has me really excited. Some people don’t like the idea of a woman writing a book about a real person and not knowing that he is a real person, but I think it is very imaginative.
November 17
Casino Royale – I can’t get excited enough about the new James Bond movie. I think Daniel Craig was the perfect choice for this role. Who cares if he is blonde? This could be the best Bond film ever. We will just have to wait and see.
Happy Feet – This looks cute. The animation looks really good as well. I have heard of kids getting really excited about this one as well. So this may very well be THE kids movie for the year. Trailer 3 is the best trailer, so check it out. I like this one a lot.
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny – Horribly terrible. This will be a waste of time really. I have nothing good to say about this film.
November 24
Deck the Halls – I like Danny Devito, and I like Matthew Broderick, but this looks like poo. I am sure that it will do well unfortunately because of the seasonal draw, but this is going to be another terrible Christmas flick.
Déjà Vu – Holy Schnikies, this looks freakin awesome. Everybody has Deja Vu, and this capitalizes on that sense of wonderment. I didn’t know anything about this until I just saw the trailer, and now I can’t wait to see it. Denzel Washington is ready to blow our minds.
The Fountain – This is the Aronofsky film that people are either really excited about or really unexcited about. I am on the latter side. This looks like a mess to me. I mean, the concept is really cool, but I just don’t see good things in line for this film.
Let’s Go to Prison – This looks promising. Dax Sheperd is everywhere it seems. He has 2 movies on this list with this one and Employee of the Month. If he keeps putting out actual, good performances, then he could have a future after all.
Opal Dream – A cute kids film about dreams and believing in something. Take the kids to it. It looks like a family story.
December 1
National Lampoon’s Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj – I loved the first Van Wilder, it is really a classic. I don’t know why they feel that they need to make a sequel to this, but they seem to make sequels to everything these days. I want to like the idea of this, I just can’t. I am sure I will see it, but I am not expecting much.
The Nativity Story – Obviously you know what this is about. It is about Jesus’ birth. It doesn’t star any big names or anything, but any hopes that a Christian movie will do well at the box office is a hope for me. We’ll see though.
Turistas – No A-list actors or anything, but with a movie like this, you don’t need them. This is going to be a slasherfest that is in the same vein as Hostel. So if you liked Hostel, this is up your alley.
December 8
Apocalypto – Mel Gibson’s newest pet project. I won’t say I am excited about it, but it could be good. It is about the Mayan culture. If nothing else, it will be interesting and authentic.
DOA: Dead or Alive – I have actually already seen this film and was seriously impressed. It is kind of like Charlie’s Angel’s. It is a lot of fun and I think it will do very well at the box office because of the attractive cast.
The Holiday – This has a really solid cast, even Jack Black looks like he may do well in this one. It does not look like a guy movie, so I can’t be too excited about it. But it will be a good date movie.
Off the Black – There is no trailer yet, so I have to give you the plot synopsis. "Off
the Black" is a coming-of-age story of teenager Dave Tibbel (Morgan)
who copes with his own distant father (Timothy Hutton) by forming an
unlikely friendship with a disheveled, irascible high school umpire,
Ray Cooke (Nolte). As they grow more dependent on each other, Ray asks
Dave to go to his 40th high school reunion and pretend to be his son, a
benevolent act of deception that winds up opening unexpected dimensions
in the two men.
Unaccompanied Minors – Kids will love this one. This is about kids who get left at the airport and find their way out of the holding area. It has Lewis Black in it, which is a negative, but other than that, this looks like fun.
December 15
Blood Diamond – Wow. That is a powerful trailer. Jennifer Connelly, Djimon Honsou, and Leonardo Dicaprio look like there could be Oscars in the future. This looks like a really good film. It doesn’t look like it is one that will do well at the box office, but I would say that the critical acclaim will make up for it.
Eragon – I know it will automatically get put up against Lord of the Rings, but only because of the genre. This looks like a very different film from LOTR. And it looks amazing. Watch the trailer and you will see what I mean.
The Pursuit of Happiness – Will Smith in a story about bringing up his son in hard times and trying to be the man he never had to look up to.
December 20
Charlotte’s Web – I think everything from my childhood will be made or remade into a movie in the next 2 years. They are working their way towards it. I know this will make loads of cash at the box office, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
December 22
The Good Sheperd – Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon in a movie about the beginning of the CIA. Matt Damon does his job all because he believes in the security of the country and its secrets. Plus Angelina Jolie. Come on.
Night at the Museum – Ben Stiller in a movie about what happens at night in a history museum. I am not a big fan of Stiller, but this one looks like a good time. Kind of makes me think of Jumanji.
Rocky Balboa – I was wondering how long it would take for another Rocky movie. This is exactly what you would expect out of Stallone. Rocky comes out of retirement to fight just one more time. I am so excited about this movie. I loved the originals and I can’t help but get my hopes up for this one.
We Are Marshall – This is the true story of the Marshall football team and the plane crash that devastated the entire country. It stars Matthew McConaghey and Matthew Fox. Everythin I have seen of this movie is positive. This is going to be a classic film.
December 25
Black Christmas – Another one that doesn’t have a trailer or much of a synopsis so I will give you what information I have. In
"Black Christmas" a sorority house is terrorized by a killer who makes
frightening telephone calls before murdering the sorority sisters
during the Christmas break.
