2005 Movies

I meant to do this a few weeks ago, but didn’t get around to it.
With the start of the summer season being revved up by the Star Wars Episode 3 movie, I thought it would be fun to go through the list of movies coming out this year and make a list of the ones I thought looked good, or just entertaining. But most people don’t read the notes I make during class so I figured I could put it on here to give a heads up to those who don’t get quite as into movies as I do. I’ll go by date so you can go see them in order. Now, keep in mind that the dates for the fall movies are subject to change because they sometimes don’t want to compete on opening weekend with other movies. So the dates I used were the ones they had posted a couple of weeks ago.

May 27 – The Longest Yard – Adam Sandler and Chris Rock remake the classic, but put in their own comedic influences.
Madagascar – Another Chris Rock film, this time with just his voice, also voices of Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, and David Schwimmer. A Dreamworks film about animals who have lived in captivity in New York all their life, then get sent to Madagascar to live in the wild.
June 3 – Cinderella Man – A period piece starring Russell Crowe about a regular guy boxer who gives hope to a nation. This one is released awfully early for an award nominee. Most movies like this don’t get released until the end of the year so they can be reviewed for awards at the beginning of the year.
June 10 – Mr. & Mrs. Smith – Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, two of the most beautiful people in Hollywood. Need I say more? Oh yeah, plus explosions and stuff!!!!
June 15 – Batman Begins – It’s about time that they made a new Batman film. This looks amazing. Christian Bale has so much acting chops. It is going to be a great movie. And like I have said before. Morgan Freeman wouldn’t be in it if it was junk.
June 24 – Bewitched – Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman in a remake of the TV show. It looks like it could be a fun movie, or really bad.
June 29 – War of the Worlds – Tom Cruise with director Steven Spielburg take on the H.G. Wells story.
July 8 – Fantastic Four – It’s no surprise that I’m excited about this. I love comic book movies. The Human Torch looks amazing and I read a review of the story that said it is either going to be awesome, or going to be terrible. I am hoping for the former.
July 15 – Wedding Crashers – Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn do what many men dream of doing. Go to weddings to pickup ladies.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory – Johnny Depp can do no wrong. He will pull off a different take on the kids story along with director Tim Burton for a summer blockbuster.
July 22 – The Island – Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen, Djimon Hounsou in a sci-fi story that seems very Matrixesque and looks to be very intriguing.
July 29 – Sky High – Kurt Russell stars in a movie about superhero high school and his son going to learn about what superpower he has. It looks like a lot of fun.
Stealth – Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, and Jamie Foxx in a Stealth fighter movie about a plane who gets smarter than those piloting it.
August 5 – Doom – Based on the big video game. It’s gonna be a bad B grade flick, but fun to watch nonetheless.
Dukes of Hazzard – I never said that these were going to be the best movies. But this looks like it will be fun to watch, especially with Jessica Simpson in it.
August 12 – Domino – Keira Knightley as a bounty hunter. Based on the real life story of Domino Harvey.
Skeleton Key – Kate Hudson in a thriller from the writer of The Ring.
August 19 – 40 Year Old Virgin – Steve Carell of the Daily Show in a movie about exactly what the title says.
August 26 – The Brothers Grimm – Matt Damon and Heath Ledger take on a movie about the legendary brothers Grimm where many of our fairy tales come from. They write the stories, and now the stories are out to get them.
September 9 – The Man – Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy in a cop comedy. The trailer for this looks funny.
September 23 – Waiting – Ryan Reynolds back in a comedic role. This is just the first of many starring roles for this guy. He has an amazing acting range, and it will only grow from here.
September 30 – Greatest Game Ever Played – Shia Labeouf in a Disney feel good movie about sports. In the same vein as The Rookie and The Miracle, so you know what to expect.
History of Violence – Viggo Mortenson is a smalltown guy who has to defend people around him and comes into the spotlight. Ed Harris comes a calling and wants to let him know why he is so good at killing people. This looks awesome.
Serenity – Based on the TV show Firefly. It looks like it could be a good sci-fi flick. Those are hard to come by.
September TBA – Aeon Flux – Based on the MTV animated show. Charlize Theron is the perfect match for this role.
October 14 – Stay – Don’t know too much about it, but it has Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts and is directed by the same guy who directed Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland. Should be really good, just hope they don’t have Ewan writhing, saying " I wanna feel good".
October 21 – Dreamer – Kurt Russell is doing well this year. This is another Disney movie to make you get the "DIsney feeling". A story about a horse.
October 28 – Legend of Zorro – The sequel to the original Zorro movie. It looks like a lot of fun to watch.
The Weather Man – Nicholas Cage and Micheal Caine in a story about a weather man. Cage plays a great emotionally distressed man.
November 4 – V for Vendetta – Another comic book based movie set in a futuristic Britain. The follow-up to the Matrix for the Wachowski brothers starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving.
November 18 – Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire – The fourth movie about the children’s books. Yes, the Harry Potter series hype is getting old, but the movies are still amazing and gratifying to watch.
November 23 – The Ice Harvest – John Cusack in any role is great. Especially when he gets to do the comedic roles he is so good at. This one is a comedic thriller.
December 9 – Chronicles of Narnia – Based on the C.S. Lewis children’s novels. Think Lord of the Rings meets Harry Potter.
Underworld: Evolution – Sequel to the Kate Beckinsale vampire action film. The first one is one of my favorite movies, I am hoping that this one lives up to the first one.
December 14 – King Kong – Peter Jackon’s directorial follow-up to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Nobody does big like Peter Jackson, and nothing is bigger than King Kong. Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, and Jack Black star in this one.

You may notice that the majority of the movies are remakes of storylines you already know and sequels. Apparently it isn’t the "in" thing to come up with original storylines.

  1. Morgan Freeman wouldn’t be in it if it was junk…

Well, I love Freeman, seriously…but how about Dreamcatchers?

  2. I haven’t seen it. The questions are
    1. How did he do in his role in the movie?
    2. Was the story a good one? Because it may have been a badly written script, but still been a good storyline and concept.

  3. Didn’t see it either…just sort of heard that it was one of those things that made people wonder why he took the role.

Hey, everyone takes a few of those though…I wasn’t disparaging him or the Batman flick though, I’m pretty stoked about it myself…
