Shopgirl Review

39m_4Like I said in my Memoirs of a Geisha review, I normally don’t review movies that the majority of people won’t watch for months. But this movie just had to get a quick review so that I can tell you what I think about a few things in it.
Normally Steve Martin is not known for his drama, but instead for his wit and comedy. But in this film, he really showed up as a solid writer. I really enjoyed this movie. It has Jason Schwartzman in it and I still liked it. So that is saying a lot. I can’t stand Schwartzman, and if he had cast someone else in that role, then I would have liked the movie even more. But he didn’t so I like it the amount that I do. This movie is based off of a novel written by Steve Martin. It stars Claire Danes, Jason Schwartzman, and Steve Martin. The film is a love story, plain and simple. But it kind of shows you the different sides to a love story. It is a love triangle that revolves around Danes’ character. I am a big Claire Danes fan anyways, so this wasn’t a big stretch for me to believe that she is wanted by these two men. But I know some guys who might not think that way. There is a cuteness that she has. It is not that she is the most gorgeous girl out there, or anything like that, but you could see her living next door to you and just being so sweet and endearing in every thing that she says, and how she carries herself. She seems very real, and not made up like many Hollywood starlets do. The movie starts out with Claire meeting Jason’s character and them going on a date that is somewhat awkward. Then she meets Martin’s character and finds that she enjoys his company as well and they go out and have a great time. Both men have qualities that she is looking for, and are somewhat the right guy for her, but she has to choose one, and circumstances make it easy for her to choose the one she does. It is a very well written story that made me laugh quite a few times out loud. I have noticed a growing trend in movies that seem to be more realistic in the way characters’ lives are portrayed, instead of overdramatized like many big budget films are. And I have to say that I like it. They are more real, and seem to be closer to what real life is like. If this relationship falls apart, then it is not going to be the end of the world, only the end of that relationship. It may be devastating for a spell, but it will pass and life will go on. This movie would make a great date movie. You don’t really come out hating any of the main 3 characters, which is normally what it is like in life, where you don’t hate the other person, only choose to not like them as much. I give Shopgirl a 7 out of 10.
