First Quarter movie roundup

Theater_1
Well, some of you were reading this when I did my summer movie roundup. I went through and did a round up of the movies that looked like fun. Well, I thought that for this first quarter, i would go through and get all of the movies that would be in wide release and let you know what I thought about it. So if you want to know about any movie and how good it looks, just click the link and check it out. This may be a constant thing to do each quarter, i’m not sure. If you like the idea, let me know.

January 6
Bloodrayne – Another video game movie in Uwe Boll B-movie fashion. Not something to look forward to.
Grandma’s Boy – From the realm of Adam Sandler, this movie is filled with all of his regular co-stars, but without him. Looks funny, but expect raunchy.
Hostel – Scary trailer. Says it is brought to you by Tarantino, but he didn’t write or direct it. Strange.

January 13
Hoodwinked – Animated film with a good voice cast. Visually it doesn’t look that great, but it looks really funny. It kind of has the same feel as the Shrek movies.
Glory Road – It’s good to see Josh Lucas in a starring role. Disney knows how to put together feel good sports movies. This one is about basketball and, as always, looks like a winner.
Last Holiday – Queen Latifah and LL Cool J star in a comedy about living life to its fullest. It looks okay, but I don’t really have high hopes for the Queen in comedies since she did Taxi.
The Libertine – Starring Johnny Depp and John Malkovich, this movie is set in London and follows Depp through a victorian setting of passion and betrayal. It looks pretty neat.
Tristan & Isolde – The first of many movies this year starring James Franco. It is an epic that is in the same vein as Troy or the time of King Arthur that looks like it may be a step below either of those.

January 20
Underworld: Evolution – I loved the first one. I have seen it countless times and am looking forward to this one. It won’t win any awards, but it will definitely be a lot of fun for action junkies and fans of Kate Beckinsale in leather. Oh yeah, and it’s about vampires and werewolfs too.

January 27
Nanny McPhee – I got to watch this one early actually and really enjoyed it. The film is a different take on the Mary Poppins story. Kids will like it, but it does have British humor, so it is a little different.
Annapolis – Another film starring James Franco about the struggle of going through the naval academy and what it takes to be the best. I have a feeling it could be a quality flick that could fall through the cracks.
Big Momma’s House 2 – The sequel to the original comedy starring Martin Lawrence. I don’t know if it will be as funny as the first. It is hard to top comedies when it comes to sequels and this one looks like it is not an exception.

February 3
Something New – A black rom-com about falling in love outside of the expectations you have for yourself. As a romantic comedy, it looks okay, but I definitely won’t see it by choice.
When a Stranger Calls – A remake of another horror film from the 70’s. Another one that all of 5 people will see and never speak of again.

February 10
Curious George – The cartoon version of the classic kids character. It looks like a lot of fun, in a bedtime story kind of way. Take the kids and enjoy Will Ferrell as the man in the yellow hat.
Failure to Launch – It looks pretty funny. And looks like a big time date movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is trying to get Matthew McConaughey to move out of his parents house.
Final Destination 3 – I know it’s shocking to see another sequel on the list. Looks like more of the same scary junk that Hollywood puts out year after year.
Firewall – Harrison Ford makes a perfect reluctant action star/hero. In this one, the stakes are his family, and he has to save them. It looks like a good film.
The Pink Panther – A remake about the classic detective starring Steve Martin. It doesn’t look near as good as I’d hoped. I will see it, but there is alot else that I would rather see.

February 17
Date Movie – A Scary Movieesque film starring Alyson Hannigan. This could be a winner. The Scary Movie films always do such a good job of poking fun at other films. This one won’t be any different.
Eight Below – A flick about Paul Walker losing his dogs and having to find them in the snow. It is a Disney film, but it is a little too formulaic to enjoy.
Freedomland – Cop Drama, Thriller, whatever you want to call it. It has Julianne Moore, and Samuel L. Jackson in it and it looks pretty good.

February 24
Alpha Dog – A pretty nice little cast in a movie that is not made for kids. It could be a good cult film, but won’t do too well at the box office other than the fact that it has Justin Timerlake starring.
Doogal – A disappointing trailer for an animated feature. Another British comedy that looks like it doesn’t have much to offer.
Running Scared –  The Paul Walker movies just keep coming. A crime drama that looks just as intense as Into the Blue was. Not so much.
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion – Something about guys dressing up as women make for automatic comedy. This one is no different. Blair Underwood is the butt of jokes this time around.

February TBA
Breaking & Entering – A good cast, but not much information yet. Jude Law stars in this drama about reevaluating his life.

March 3
16 Blocks – Bruce Willis and Mos Def in an action flick together. Bruce Willis was born to do action movies and for some reason, I like seeing Mos Def act. He is fun for me. I think this one could be good.
Dave Chappelle’s Block Party – It’s Dave Chappelle. You either like him or you don’t. There is no in between with him.
Goal! The Dream Begins – Soccer movie about a Mexican kid who goes to England to play ball. It looks like a Disney movie that has been touched by someone like Micheal Bay.
Pulse – Stars Kristen Bell. So I will see it. She is a great young actress. I look forward to a lot more from her. I just hope she doesn’t get typecast as a detective similar to Veronica Mars every time.

March 10
The Hills Have Eyes – Emilie De Ravin(from Lost) in a horror flick about getting stranded in a radioactive area where there is something living around them that shouldn’t even be alive. Looks freaky.
Idlewind – Many black cast  members. Not much information as of yet though. No trailer or anything up yet. Coming soon though.
The Shaggy Dog – A solid cast formed behind Tim Allen as a sequel to the 1969 Shaggy Dog. It looks like fun, and nobody takes on roles like that better than Tim Allen.

March 17
Ask the Dust – Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek star in a drama set in the 30’s about passion and love. It doesn’t look that impressive, but I would say it will be a beautifully shot movie.
Killshot – Thomas Jane, Mickey Rourke, and Diane Lane in a crime drama where Rourke is trying to cover up a murder that Lane and Jane have seen. It looks like it could be really good.
She’s the Man – Starring Amanda Bynes, this movie is about a sister taking the place of her brother in a boarding school, and falling in love with her new roommate. Hard to place this early.
V for Vendetta – The movie looks really cool. I mean, stylistically, as well as in the way of the storyline, it looks like it will be really cool. Reminds me of Equlibrium. Based on a comic book.

March 24
Inside Man – I am normally not a Spike Lee fan, but this one looks good. Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster in a solid crime drama that looks extremely good.
RV – It’s about time that Robin Williams got back into the comedy stuff. And this one looks right up his alley as he takes his family in an RV on a road trip to try to bond. It’s like a good National Lampoons family movie without Chevy Chase.
Stay Alive – A throwaway teen horror flick. Just another to add to all of the junky ones that we already have shelved.

March 31
ATL – A black comedy/drama about rollerskating? You have got to be kidding me. It’ll be like Get rich or die Tryin’ mixed with Roll Bounce. Except not as much fun as Roll Bounce.
Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction – Amazing, a sequel. We haven’t seen enough of those in 2005, so we start 2006 the same way. This does not seem like a movie that should be made. But you never know.
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown – The first flick was great, and this one should be even better. I mean, add Sean William Scott and Jay Leno, it will be funny every time.
Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector – Larry the Cable Guy has such a great sense of timing that this can’t go wrong. It won’t win any awards, but it will definitely be a fun time.
Lucky Number Slevin – Another Bruce Willis movie. Him and Hartnett in a thriller with a solid cast. Keep your eyes open for this one.
A Scanner Darkly – Keanu Reeves stars in this stylistically interesting film based on the novel by Phillip K. Dick. It looks neat, but with just a teaser, it is hard to say how it will be in the end.
Slither – What a freaky looking movie. Not excited about it, but it does look interesting.

March TBA
Harsh Times – Christian Bale and Eva Longoria in a crime drama that could be a throwaway film, or could be extremely interesting.
